In Response to Increasing Concerns About COVID-19, TRCF will transition its 2020 Gala to an Online Event and Fundraising Campaign

It is a challenging time for so many and our hearts are filled with concern for the health and well-being of the teens and families that we support. Due to the current health guidelines for public gatherings, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the in-person Gala for 2020 and transition to an online fundraising campaign, ‘TRCF: Making a Difference from a Distance’ event.  This was a gut-wrenching decision to have to make, considering the annual TRCF Gala is our largest source of fundraising to support our programs throughout the year. However, we are very fortunate to already have a number of our supporters reach out to see how they could continue to help in this time of need. We believe this is the perfect opportunity to bring the spirit of our in-person Gala to an online platform.

While a virtual event is not exactly what we had in mind for this year, it will allow us to share stories on how, with our donor’s help, we have impacted the lives of teens and adolescents battling cancer over the past year. The virtual ‘TRCF: Making a Difference from a Distance’ event will begin on May 25, 2020 and end on May 29, 2020. This online event will include updates on our programs from the past year, first-hand stories from those we have helped, a raffle for a weekend getaway, a silent auction, and donation opportunities to continue to make a difference in the lives of the teen survivors we support. We have sponsorship opportunities for this event available on our website, with all proceeds going to fund this year’s college scholarships.

We understand that everyone is being impacted by these difficult times, none more than the teens in treatment with compromised immune systems. We have made the commitment to not only continue the previously awarded scholarships for cancer survivors, but to again increase the number of scholarships offered.  There is no better way to spread love, hope and inspiration than by continuing to support this group of fighters who have already fought so hard for their health. During these times of uncertainty, we will lead with kindness and compassion and provide as much support as we are able to for those in need.

We hope to be able to see you in-person at next year’s gala on April 30, 2021. We WILL get through this and will embrace the journey along the way. Stay safe and spread love, hope and positivity.

With love,

The Ruth Cheatham Foundation plans to launch a Utah Scholarship in honor of Pancreatic Cancer fighter, Craig Whittemore.

Dallas, TX - The Ruth Cheatham Foundation (TRCF), a nonprofit focused on supporting adolescent youth through all phases of cancer treatment, announced today its plans to expand their programs outside of the great state of Texas. The Craig Whittemore Scholarship (CWS), an honorary program beginning in 2020, will be dedicated to adolescent cancer patients located in Utah.   Craig, a lifelong Utah resident and father to TRCF Co-Founder Douglas Whittemore, was diagnosed with Stage IV Pancreatic Cancer in November of 2018.

The honorary program will be the first of its kind for TRCF and its total duration will depend on its funding, according to TRCF’s President and Co-Founder Lindsay Whittemore.  “We couldn’t think of a better way to expand the Foundations’ reach and programs, while honoring one of our original supporters and beloved family members.” said Mrs. Whittemore. “We have such strong ties to the state of Utah with a well-established donor and volunteer base, this was a natural next step in our growth plans”.

“I was moved to tears when our board voted unanimously in favor of expanding under this program. More importantly, I was given the unique opportunity to tell my father that his journey is going to have a positive impact on teens in need and that his legacy will live on” said Douglas Whittemore, Treasurer and Co-Founder. “That is a rare moment that few are afforded at this phase of the journey. Seeing his face and what this scholarship program  meant to him is something I will cherish for the rest of my life”.

TRCF plans to fund its honorary program with donations originating from the Utah market along with any designated donations to CWS. TRCF, established in 2016, focuses on advocacy, education and financial aid for teens impacted by cancer. In 2019, TRCF granted a total of twenty (20) scholarships to Texas adolescents impacted by cancer, a 125% growth over the previous year.

“Words can’t express how honored I am to be associated with someone as special as Ruth. I have witnessed firsthand what her influence has created through her family members.” said Craig Whittemore. “To be told that through the TRCF platform we will be able to support teens battling cancer here in Utah, I am humbled to think of how many young adults this can help. Education is the key to opening doors to your future”.

TRCF asks that when donating to CWS program, please use the “add note” feature and include; C/O Craig Whittemore Scholarship and click on the “Share Mailing Address” feature within PayPal.   This will assist in ensuring donations will be directed to CWS. TRCF will be launching a unique page within its website with additional information on its CWS program.

Former Dallas Cowboy, Babe Laufenberg to headline The Ruth Cheatham Foundation gala and fundraiser on May 3, 2019

Dallas, TX - The Ruth Cheatham Foundation (TRCF), a nonprofit focused on supporting adolescent youth through all phases of cancer treatment, announced today that Babe Laufenberg has agreed to speak at the Foundation’s 2019 gala and fundraiser.

Babe, originally drafted by the Washington Redskins in 1983, played 8 years as a quarterback in the NFL and finished his career playing two seasons with the Dallas Cowboys. With combined success in both the NFL and broadcasting, Babe Laufenberg is one of the most popular sports personalities in North Texas. Entering his 26th season with the Dallas Cowboys Radio Network, he was the lead sports anchor for KTVT CBS 11 for 17 years and was twice selected as the Sportscaster of the Year in the state of Texas by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association. Helping adolescent cancer patients is a personal mission for Babe, as his son Luke was diagnosed with Burkitt leukemia in December of 2017.  After the fight of his life, Luke is now cancer free!

“Each year we work to include a celebrity with strong ties to Texas, and more importantly, an individual who shares our passion and commitment to changing the lives of adolescent cancer patients. Babe was a perfect match for us; he is a massive personality in North Texas. On top of his celebrity status, what really makes this special is that it is also a personal mission for Babe and his family,” said Douglas Whittemore, Treasurer and Co-Founder. “We are humbled and overwhelmed with gratitude that he accepted our invitation!”

“I am honored to be a part of the Ruth Cheatham Foundation Gala, providing support, education services and financial aid to help young adults diagnosed with cancer,” said Babe Laufenberg. “It’s a privilege to help inspire hope for those battling through treatment and generate funds to support survivors in completing their college education.”

As a tribute to the Laufenberg family, the foundation, at its 2019 Gala, will announce the recipient of a unique scholarship in honor of Luke Laufenberg and his inspiring story of his battle with Burkitt leukemia. Luke is a great example for others that with hope and drive, anything is possible.

The Ruth Cheatham Foundation Announces 2018 College Scholarship Recipients

NINE NORTH TEXAS CANCER PATIENTS AND SUVIVORS AWARDED SHCOLARSHIPS BY LOCAL NONPROFIT

Smaller Logo.png

DALLAS, TX - Nine extraordinary students have been selected as recipients of The Ruth Cheatham Foundation (TRCF) Scholarship Award; given to students who have had or are currently battling cancer.

“Central to our work at the foundation, is a dedication to provide aid specifically directed to the unique educational needs of this underserved group,” said Lindsay Whittemore, TRCF President and Co-Founder.  “All of our recipients demonstrated how driven and resilient they are, showing great potential in leading future generations and positively shaping this world we live in.”

Cancer is both emotionally and financially draining.  TRCF is dedicated to providing much needed support, education, and hope to young adults in all stages of the cancer process. TRCF Scholarships are being awarded at a time when the total patient costs for cancer average $6,000-$10,000 out of pocket annually.  Compound that with the increasing costs of tuition (Nearly $10,000 at public universities and almost $35,000 at private colleges) and the prospect of continuing an education after a cancer diagnosis can seem unattainable. Supporting these students continued academic success and sharing their stories, underscores the foundation’s efforts across all of our programs.

TRCF invites you to meet and celebrate our 2018 scholarship recipients at their annual gala on May 11th at The Omni Hotel in Dallas.   To learn more or purchase tickets please visit: http://www.ruthcheathamfoundation.org/gala/
